Selah Rose Kjar, a senior music major at Angelo State University, has been honored with the prestigious 2023-24 Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award from the Presser Foundation in Philadelphia.

The award, which includes a $3,000 scholarship and the title of Presser Scholar, recognizes students selected by their music faculty for achieving high levels of musical and academic excellence, demonstrating leadership and contributing to inclusive communities. Kjar is the first ASU student to receive this recognition following the university's invitation to participate in the award program in 2023.

Graduating from Water Valley High School, Kjar will earn her Bachelor of Music with teacher certification from ASU in May. Her primary instrument is the clarinet, and she has been an active member of various ASU music ensembles, including the Ram Band, the Wind Ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Band and the Woodwind Ensembles. Additionally, Kjar has showcased her versatility by performing on secondary instruments such as the trombone and the tuba with the ASU Symphonic Band.

During her time at ASU, Kjar has displayed strong leadership qualities. She served as a section leader and later as the student assistant to Jonathan Alvis, director of bands, within the ASU Ram Band. In these roles, she not only demonstrated musical proficiency, but also mentored fellow students, facilitated rehearsals and assisted in music instruction and drill preparation. Kjar's dedication to musical education extends beyond her university commitments, as she has been actively involved as a counselor and team member for the annual ASU Summer Music Camp since 2021.

Kjar attributed her success to the hard work she has put in. “I put in 100% of my effort into every class, regardless of the subject matter,” Kjar said. “Balance comes with dedicated time in each part of your education.”

In addition to the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award, Kjar has been a recipient of multiple scholarships, including the ASU Performing Arts Scholarship, the San Angelo Area Foundation Scholarship and the San Angelo Community Band Scholarship.

Following her graduation, Kjar will begin her professional career as the head band director for the Eden Consolidated Independent School District.

Stephen Emmons, professor of music at ASU, expressed pride in Kjar's accomplishments and contributions to the university's music program: "She has a bright future as a musician and educator, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors."
